Some thoughts on AI and photography

I haver realised that I am not that interested in creating AI-images instead of or as a part of my photography. I enjoy the process of taking photos, editing and sharing them.

However I find that there are some interesting philosophical aspects on AI and photography that can be interesting to take a short moment to think and reflect on.

One of the most obvious things is the feeling of trusting an image, now this has always been a question when looking at a picture, is this real or not. But I foresee that this will become even more important in the future. I mean it is one thing if an image for a commercial is altered, but I feel that it is different if the image is said to be documentary or journalistic. So the question if the image is authentic becomes more important.

How will AI affect creativity? There seems to be a few areas in photography were we see AI at the moment, there is AI in the camera to assist with focus, there is AI in editing to help with that including being able to fill a frame, and there is AI creating photo like images.

Using AI will assist in creating some kinds of images, it can definitely help with speeding up the time for editing, it can assist in finding and keeping focus, but what if your camera can show you what is a good composition, will it be you or your camera that creates the moment? Will AI begin to control your creativity, it simply knows which images gets the most likes and suddenly your photographic language is governed by the amount of likes that can be found in metadata from instagram. What space do we leave for “the happy little accidents” of Rob Ross. Can you still have your individual style and photographic language?

Another interesting aspect is if the language used to analyse and describe images will be the same one used to now create images from AI – tools?
